Two or Three Statements Based

Cause and Effect Reasoning :

When we examine things, then we seek to explain why the things happened the way they did. We categorise this as cause and effect reasoning. The strong points behind any reason are known as cause and the impact of the cause is known as effect. If an action or situation (A) has occurred because of some other action or situation (B), then (B) is the cause of A. Alternatively, (A) is said to be the effect of B.

These questions require that the given statements be classified either as 'Cause" or 'Effect". In order to do this correctly, the nature of the relationships that exists between the statements needs to be properly understood and identified. As, there are many different types of relations which can exist between the pairs of statements given, the following simple example is used to illustrate the point help give a better understanding of the concept.

Example :

  • There is an increase in the sale of N95 masks.
  • Due to pandemic, people have been taking precautionary steps of social distancing and using masks in public places.
  • In both these statements, there is a causal relationship involved as the increase in sale of masks has been due to the pandemic.

Rules to keep in mind while solving cause and effect questions

  • You must be able to make out whether one statement is the cause of the other statement and vice versa.
  • Cause occurs before the effect. Both the statements must lead to a sort of relationship with each other.
  • It might be possible that while reading the sentences, you may come across a third event that is responsible for creating the effect or acts as a common cause for both the events. But for analysing that event, you need to read the statements properly.
  • If no relationship seems to be established, both the statements are independent situations.
  • Introduction : In this type of questions, two statements are given which could either be cause or effect. The candidate has to logically determine the cause and effect.

Direction : In each of the following questions two statements numbered I and II are given. These may be cause and effect relationship between the two statements. These two statements may be the effect of the same cause or independent causes. These statements may be independent causes without having any relationship. Read both the statements in each question.

    Give answer :

  • (a) If statement I is the cause and statements II is its effect
  • (b) If Statement II is the cause and Statement I is its effect
  • (c) If both the Statements I and II are independent causes
  • (d) If both the Statements I and II are effects of independent causes
  • Question : Identify the relation between two statements.

    I.  The local cooperative credit society has decided to stop giving loans to farmers with immediate effect.

II. A large number of credit society members have withdrawn major parts of their deposits from the credit society.

Solution : (b) Clearly, withdrawal of funds by society members is bound to reduce the lending power of the society.
